Grounding thought
When people don’t “get” a number, they not only miss the number itself but also feel more distanced from you and your presentation. They may tune out and miss the message. Worse, they may even tune you out, because you’ve failed to build rapport that makes them feel included.

Background information
Numbers and math can be intimidating for a lot of people
Numeracy skills can be an area where a lot of support is needed; the PIACC study shows that a lot of people encounter challenges with everyday math activities
How can we be thoughtful about sharing information related to numbers taking these points into account?
Big takeaways
We discussed several strategies
Make big numbers more relatable
Make content meaningful (social distancing examples from across the country)
Consider using estimates (300+ vs. 311) when the idea is the most important thing
Make it memorable
Use clear visuals and labels when using charts, tables, and graphs and make sure the WHY of the graphic is clear
