Annual Clear Language Lab Honorees

CLL Professional Development: Get Involved

Since 2022, the Clear Language Lab has honored an organization that has committed to and forged new paths in plain language and communication equity during our annual Week of Giving. Check out our past honorees below!

ABOUT THE WORK

Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH) advances affordable housing aligned with services that help people thrive. They advocate for policies, practices, and funding to advance the supportive housing sector.

WHY WE CELEBRATE CSH

In our experience, housing-related information is often filled with legalese, jargon, and unnecessary complexity. We love that CSH has embraced plain language and applied it to so many facets of their work, from internal communications to developing accessible everyday content for housing seekers.

Literacy Works' Clear Language Lab staff Melanie Sampson and Sarah Glazer chat with CSH's Julie Nelson, Richard Rowe, and Stephanie Sideman.

Literacy Works' Clear Language Lab staff Melanie Sampson and Sarah Glazer chat with Rebecca Cacayuran, ECF Vice President for Community Investment, & Akilah Wilson, ECF Communications Manager.

ABOUT THE WORK

Evanston Community Foundation helps Evanston thrive now and forever as a vibrant, inclusive, and equitable community.  ECF builds, connects, and distributes resources and knowledge through local organizations for the common good.

WHY WE CELEBRATE EVANSTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

We love seeing a foundation align their values with their work! Evanston Community Foundation got the memo that equitable foundation practices means making clear accessible information apply to grantmaking processes, too. We are thrilled to work with them and value their commitment to equitable communication within the foundation and the community

they serve

Literacy Works' Clear Language Lab's Melanie Sampson chats with Jobi Cates, Executive Director of Restore Justice.

ABOUT THE WORK

Restore Justice works to make Illinois a safer and more compassionate state by replacing the ineffective, extreme sentencing policies from the past with evidenced-based laws that allow families and communities to heal.

WHY WE CELEBRATE RESTORE JUSTICE

We had the opportunity to work closely with RJ on plain language training for their team. They have worked hard to apply a plain language lens to their advocacy work. An excellent example of the crucial difference their messaging made is pushing for clear, effective information about the importance of  COVID-19 vaccinations for people who are incarcerated.
